Understanding the formal elements of art and principles of composition can be a very important way to examine, understand and discuss a work of art. The text describes the formal elements as line, light and value, color, texture and pattern, shape and volume, space, time and movement, and chance/improvisation/spontaneity. The text describes the principles of composition as balance, rhythm, proportion and scale, emphasis, unity and variety.

go to wikiart.org to search for an artwork to discuss. In at least two paragraphs, write a formal analysis in which you describe at least two formal elements and one principle of composition. Follow the guidelines below before beginning your assignment.

1. Be sure to include the artist’s name, the name of the artwork and the year in which it was made. Also describe whether the work is realistic, abstract, or non objective in appearance.

2. Be specific and use language found in the textbook. For example: if you are discussing the color in Van Gogh’s In the Night Café, I would expect that you discuss his use of complementary colors. If you are discussing texture in a work, explain whether it is visual or actual texture. If you discuss the line in that painting, be specific. State whether you see contour lines or outlines. Or perhaps you could discuss the line quality of the line work in that painting. Or perhaps you could describe cross contour lines, if you see any.

Remember to be specific! Being vague or unclear when describing the artwork is the easiest way to lose credit for this assignment.

3. Respond to at least one of your classmate’s posts in which you describe an element or principle that your classmate did not discuss. For example: if your classmate discussed the color and line in In the Night Café, you could discuss Van Gogh’s application of actual or tactile texture.

Again, remember to be specific. For example, a comment like “this painting has a lot of texture” is too vague.

4. Avoid discussing popular paintings that you knew about before taking this course. Take full advantage of the website and this course by getting out of your comfort zone and discussing a work of art that you have never seen before.
